Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study is part of a larger doctoral research project aiming to determine the utilisation of maternal and neonatal health services among the remote and poorest populations of Zambia. This study was approved by the Tropical Disease Research Centre in Zambia (TDRC; Ref No: TRC/C4/07/2015) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa (Ref No: BE363/15). Formal permission was also obtained from the Zambia Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child and from the traditional leaders through the District Medical Officers of the respective selected districts. Informed consent was obtained from each study participant after explaining the objectives of the study and procedure.
