Ethical Considerations
: This study was conducted with careful attention to ethical guidelines. The AutismQA dataset was derived entirely from publicly available knowledge and contains no personal or sensitive individual data, ensuring privacy. The human evaluations (expert reviews) were performed with informed consent and in accordance with our institution’s IRB guidelines (our institutional review determined that no formal IRB approval was required for this expert review process, as it did not involve personal data or clinical interventions). We emphasize that while the QA content provides medically relevant information about autism, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice. In developing answers, especially for questions that could influence health decisions (e.g., around treatments or vaccine myths), we consulted clinical experts to ensure accuracy and alignment with medical consensus. All content was curated to use respectful and inclusive language (e.g., identity-first language such as “autistic individuals” and discussion of neurodiversity), avoiding stigma or bias. When deploying any system built on AutismQA, we recommend including disclaimers advising users to consult healthcare professionals for personal medical concerns. Finally, we plan to release the AutismQA dataset openly to encourage transparency and community oversight. This will allow other researchers—including autistic individuals and family members—to review and improve the data, helping to maintain accuracy, relevance, and ethical standards over time.
