: On behalf of all authors, the corresponding author states that there is no conflict of interest.
: The necessary finite element matrices for the shell structures (see Sect. of this paper) were implemented in MATLAB and all finite element analyses were also performed in MATLAB. Mesh data (information pertaining to the nodes and elements) were generated with the help of Siemens NX. Optimisation problems were solved using the open-source library IPOPT (Wächter and Biegler ) together with the MATLAB interface developed by Bertolazzi (). The datasets generated and analysed during the current study are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request.
