: No approval of research ethics committees was required to accomplish the goals of this study because all experimental work was conducted on whale baleen material that was discarded at sites in South Georgia during the commercial whaling era. Material was transported to the UK by individual researchers prior to the international agreement for CITES regulation of shipment of whales. CITES was adopted by the UK in 1976, and whales were listed under Appendix I of CITES between 1975 and 1986.
