: All research was carried out under the Mao Mana Foundation research permit 06793/MCE/DIREN for handling of a category B protected species within the marine sanctuary of French Polynesia issued by the Direction de l’Environnement de Polynésie Française (DIREN). This study was fully funded by the DIREN. The authors declare no conflict of interest. All sharks were handled under strict monitoring and examined for signs of stress throughout the procedure. Only individuals that appeared in good health and fit for processing were selected for this study.
