: No approval of research ethics committees was required to accomplish the goals of this study because experimental work was conducted with an unregulated invertebrate species. Applicable international, national, and/or institutional guidelines for the collection, care and use of animals were followed. For this study, the University of followed best animal welfare practices in the keeping and rearing of marine animals during the collection and handling of Calloria inconspicua individuals. All collection was permitted by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries, under a special collection permit granted to the University of Otago (MPI Special Permit 824-2).
