: All the experimental procedures were stated by a competent authority (ORBEA 3/2017) to be in accordance with the requirements following the European guidelines (Directive 2010/63/EU) transposed to the Portuguese law (Decreto-Lei n.º 113/2013). Capture, handling, and transportation of shrews were authorized by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF, license numbers 13/2017/CAPT and 163/2018/CAPT). Shrews were cared for in accordance with the Animal Behaviour guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioral research and teaching (ASAB/ABSCitationRef removed). Methods and results are reported according to the ARRIVE guidelines (Percie du Sert et al.CitationRef removed). After the conclusion of experimental procedures, shrews were released at their capture location.
