: All the experimental procedures were stated by a competent authority (ORBEA 3/2017) to be in accordance with the requirements following the European guidelines (Directive 2010/63/EU) transposed to the Portuguese law (Decreto-Lei n.º 113/2013). Capture, handling, and transportation of shrews were authorized by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF, license numbers 13/2017/CAPT and 163/2018/CAPT). Shrews were cared for in accordance with the Animal Behaviour guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioral research and teaching (ASAB/ABS). Methods and results are reported according to the ARRIVE guidelines (Percie du Sert et al.). After the conclusion of experimental procedures, shrews were released at their capture location.
