: All research was conducted under a research permit issued by the Ministry of Environment Nature and Tourism (EWT/8/36/4XXXVIII). During the period of data collection, observational research of free-ranging wild animals in Botswana did not require Animal Care and Ethics approval. However, all fieldwork conformed to the “Guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching,” published by the Animal Behaviour Society.
