: All work was conducted in accordance with the ethical requirements and recommendations for animal care of the Key Laboratory of Animal Biology of Chongqing, China (Permit No. Zhao-20210501–02). Experimental procedures were consistent with ASAB guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioral research (). Chemical alarm cue donors were euthanized as quickly as possible following their collection, and all excess fish were released at their site of capture following experimental assays. We determined the volumes to alarm cues required to meet our planned sample sizes a priori and kept a running tally of tissue collected to ensure no animals were sacrificed unnecessarily.
