: Only insects were used in the study. In China, there is no mandatory ethical procedure for the use of invertebrates in animal experiments. The experiments were carefully designed to reduce the number of test individuals and unnecessary treatments while maintaining proper sample sizes for sound analysis. The design of the predation experiment mimicked the natural foraging scene to minimise the potential stress. We also adopted computational simulations to evaluate the foraging gains to reduce unnecessary use of live animals. Hierodula patellifera individuals were reared normally in our laboratory after the experiment.
