: All experiments were conducted at the Ethological Station Hasli of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the University of Bern, Switzerland. The captive holding of the fish was carried out under licence no. BE 4/22 and experiments were conducted under licence no. BE 34/22 of the Veterinary Office of the Canton of Bern. In addition, we followed the guidelines provided by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour for the use of animals in behavioural research (ASAB Ethical Committee & ABS Animal Care Committee ). All fish were monitored daily during feeding by noting normal feeding behaviour, posture, morphology and behaviour. Evicted fish, recognised by limited movement and increased aggression by conspecifics were identified during daily monitoring and immediately isolated. All fish were retained in our permanent breeding stock after the end of the study.
