: This paper is based on a qualitative assessment of five cases, two of which involved research subject to human-subjects review. The Hopi drought project was deemed exempt from oversight by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Arizona in 2011. Additionally, the project was reviewed, approved, and granted research permission by the Hopi Tribe’s Cultural Preservation Office, also in 2011. The Clyde River project was reviewed by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Colorado in 2018, was approved and granted a research license by the Nunavut Research Institute, and was approved by the Hamlet of Clyde River.
