: The research that led to this idea originated in a two-year externally funded project with car2go (later Share Now, from May 2018 to April 2020). All four authors were involved in this project, and the purpose was to introduce a differentiated pricing system. This purpose was then put into practice in 2019. The idea for this paper came from the insight into practice that the authors gained through the collaboration. The actual research on dynamic pricing based on idle time data took place well after the project ended.
