: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest. The sampling was licensed by the Directorate of Fisheries and permission was obtained from relevant landowners. Gillnetting for ecological sampling with lethal endpoints does not require a licence from the Committee of Animal Welfare by Icelandic Law, but animal welfare was considered by frequent monitoring of gill-nets, release of bycatch and humane endpoints of salmonids.
