: Most fish used in this research were collected by fine meshed mesopelagic and demersal research trawls under special permit for the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries. This project only worked on dead animals, so there were no specific ethical considerations. Kerguelen Fieldwork was approved by the Conseil des Programmes Scientifiques et Technologies Polaires of the Institut Polaire Français Paul Emile Victor (IPEV), and procedures were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of IPEV. No fish were CITES listed.
