: (1) Two hundred and ninety-one of the 640 patients enrolled in this study have been previously reported in the World J Gastrointest Surg (Gu et al (2024) Added value of the ratio of cross diameters of the appendix in ultrasound diagnosis of AA. World J Gastrointest Surg 16: 21–28). This prior article dealt with the development of a ratio of two diameters on the cross-section of the appendix and its role in the diagnosis of AA whereas in this manuscript we reported the development and validation of a sum of two diameters on the cross-section of the appendix for the evaluation of AA, and there was the difference in terms of the study design between them. (2) Two hundred and ten of the 640 patients enrolled in this study have been previously reported in Abdom Radiol (Liang et al (2024) Introducing the ratio of cross diameters of the appendix for ultrasound diagnosis of AA can significantly increase specificity. Abdom Radiol 49:2177-2186. ). This prior article dealt with whether the introduction of the ratio of the cross diameters on the transverse section of the appendix (RATIO) ≤ 1.18 is useful for improving the ultrasound diagnosis of AA. On the other hand, in this manuscript, we investigated whether using a sum of the cross diameters on the transverse section of the appendix can improve the diagnosis of AA, and there was a difference in terms of the study design between them.
