: This study was performed in line with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Approval was granted by Scotland A Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 05/MRE/0063)). Human tissues were stored and analysed in accordance with UK legislation and the Human Tissue Authority licence held by UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. Post-mortem samples of brain were sent from Oxford University Brain Bank and Edinburgh University National CJD Research and Surveillance Unit to UCL for analysis.
