All samples collected from Nottingham used in this study were pseudo-anonymised; those collected prior to 2006 did not require informed patient consent under the Human Tissue Act; for samples collected after 2006, informed consent was obtained from all individual participants included in the study. Ethical approval for the breast cancer cohort was issued by the North West-Greater Manchester Central Research Ethics Committee under the title ‘Nottingham Health Science Biobank (NHSB)’ reference number 15/NM/0685.
