: The protocol of this study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) of University of Cape Coast, Ghana, with reference number UCCIRB/CHAS/2015/31. Euthanasia of the chickens was in strict adherence with the Institutional Animal Care and use Committee (IACUC) guidelines, DRIC. Permission was obtained from the authorities of the various hospitals where human samples were collected. Participation in the study was voluntary without incentives. The purpose and procedures of the study were explained to all participants, and a written informed consent was obtained from each participating patient. Informed consent was obtained from parents or guardians for child participants. Additionally, permission was obtained from the Ghana Veterinary Service, Accra (Ref. No. VSD/RSS/01/15) for the use of the animals.
