: We followed the guidelines provided by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour/Animal Behaviour Society for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and Teaching (Guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching ). We did not force animals to participate and all animals voluntarily participated in the experiment. We detected no signs that the used food colouring had any negative effects on the animals. Feeding behaviour and faeces were normal after trials in which food colouring was used. All animals are part of our captive bred stock and were retained to be used in future experiments. All testing was approved by the Suisse Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (National No. 33232, Cantonal No. BE144/2020). Captive conditions were approved by the Suisse Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (Laboratory animal husbandry license: No. BE4/11).
