Ethics statement: All procedures were conducted according to ARRIVE guidelines and national animal protection laws. Facilities were approved for keeping and breeding wild cavies by the local authorities (2014 under licence number 530.42 16 30-1) and animal experimentation procedures were granted by the “Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz (LANUV)” under permit number: 84-02.05.20.12.246. After completion of the experiments, all animals were kept for breeding or participated in further behavioural studies.
