Due to the urgency of conducting research in patients with COVID-19, an exemption for consent was approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committee at the Erasmus University Medical center. An opt-out informed consent procedure (MEC-2022–0297) was used, and patients who expressed objections to participation were excluded from the study. No other exclusion criteria were applied.
