: The experiments reported here comply with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (National Research Council CitationRef removed), the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour/Animal Behavior Society Guidelines for the Use of Animals in Research and the American Society of Primatologists’ Principles for the Ethical Treatment of Primates. This study was further approved by the ethical boards of Kristiansand Zoo and Leintal Zoo before its commencement. No specific permit or agency approvals were required for this project. All the animals were tested in their groups and no individual isolation took place. All participation in the study was voluntary, no disturbance was caused to the animals and no isolation of individual subjects took place during the experiments. The experimenters never attempted to encourage the chimpanzees to interact with or manipulate the testing materials. Subjects were never deprived of food or water, and their regular feeding routine was continued during the study. The subjects had access to water ad libitum prior to, during, and after testing.
