Declarations
: The study employed only non-invasive camera trapping, without capture, handling, marking, translocation, or biological sampling of wildlife. According to the Mexican General Wildlife Law (LGVS; Diario Oficial de la Federación, July 3, 2000, as amended through July 16, 2025), authorization from SEMARNAT (the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources) is required for scientific specimen collection; however, this requirement does not apply to camera trapping. The LGVS does not contain any provision requiring approval from an animal ethics committee for research with wildlife.Fieldwork in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, covering all monitoring periods between 2016 and 2022, was conducted under a collaborative agreement between WWF Mexico and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), with the accompaniment and direct supervision of CONANP park rangers. Research in surrounding communities was authorized through free, prior, and informed consent agreements signed with the local authorities of each community. Permits, work plans, and consent documentation are available upon justified request.Images of people captured incidentally were excluded and immediately deleted as a standard data management practice; only wildlife records were retained and analyzed.
