: The study was reviewed and approved by the institutional review board (ethics committee) of the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, India, before the study began. The purpose of the study and procedure of data collection were described to the <i>Gram Pradhans</i> (elected head of each village) and the district social welfare officer to attain their permission and cooperation. The detailed purpose, protocol of the study and time required to complete questionnaires were explained to each respondent. Confidentiality was also explained to participants so that they could refuse to answer any question and withdraw from the study at any point of time. The study did not offer any incentives in either cash or kind for participation. The entire interview, including the questionnaire and scales used in this study, was conducted in the local language, which is Hindi.
