: We used secondary data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Ethical approval for the first four SHARE waves was granted from the Ethics Committee at University of Mannheim and for the later SHARE waves was granted from the Ethics Council of the Max Planck Society.
