: Our paper is analyzing a public dataset of over 40 years of conservation of Podocnemis expansa in Brazilian Amazon (which represents nearly 70% of the species’s distribution. Our results clearly indicate that the populations of P. expansa are continuously recovering. We thereby declare that there is potential conflict of interest regarding the authors of the following papers: (1) Forero-Medina, G., Ferrara, C.R., Vogt, R.C., et al., 2019. On the future of the giant South American river turtle Podocnemis expansa. Oryx, pp.1-8. (2) Rhodin, A.G., Stanford, C.B., Van Dijk, P.P., Eisemberg, C., et al., 2018. Global Conservation Status of Turtles and Tortoises (Order Testudines). Chelonian Conservation and Biology, 17(2), pp.135-161. (3) Eisemberg, C.C., Vogt, R.C., Balestra, R.A.M., Reynolds, S.J. and Christian, K.A., 2019. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket–Lessons learned from the largest-scale and longest-term wildlife conservation program in the Amazon Basin. Biological Conservation, 238, p.108182. The findings of the mentioned papers are based on incomplete datasets (specially the latest 13 years) or based on questionable criteria that cannot speak strongly than long term datasets. We then disagree with the conclusions and, specially, the recommendations. We would like to contribute for a true debate on the conservation of the species but based on real data and robust analyses. The authors of the article only used data collected by the program over the 40 years of execution. Because it is a Government program with the aim of recovering the population of the species Podocnemis expansa, all activities were made in order to maximize it survival rate.
: The authors declare that the Programa Quelônios da Amazônia is program of the Brazilian Government.
: All authors have made substantial contributions to the preparation of the manuscript and agree with its order of authorship and final version.
