: For the preparation of rat hippocampal brain slices, all animals were maintained in accordance with the Guide for the Home Office Code and Practice for the Housing and Care of Animals used in Scientific Procedures. The procedures were authorized under a project license granted under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. All other animal manipulations (for mouse primary cortical cells) were carried out according to the Directive 2010/63/EU of the European parliament and of the European Union council (22 September 2010) on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The ethical policy of each research center involved complies with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH Publication No. 85–23, revised 1996).
