: Animal handling, banding, and blood collection at MSI were conducted under approved annual animal use protocols from the University of New Brunswick, and annual scientific, migratory bird sanctuary, and bird banding permits from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). At WB, birds were handled under authority of a federal Migratory Bird Banding Permit, access to the Witless Bay Islands Seabird Ecological Reserve was granted by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador Parks and Natural Areas Division, and bird handling and blood collection was done under an approved animal use protocol from the ECCC Eastern Wildlife Animal Care Committee. Blood sample collection from JI were conducted with the approval of the University of Manitoba Animal Care Committee and Canadian Bird Banding Office. Blood sample collection from QC were conducted with the approval of the animal care committees of ECCC and Parks Canada.
