: All procedures performed were permitted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Scientific Collecting permit #11017. The California Department of Water Resources did not have an IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) process in place at the time of the study. The collection, handling, and tagging of M. saxatilis was conducted using the best available science and veterinary practices for minimizing stress and ensuring survival with special emphasis on mitigating the effects of anesthesia and surgical implantation of acoustic tags. Surgical methods were reviewed by aquatic animal veterinary staff of the University of California, Davis, and were found to be within acceptable standards for a field based, wild-caught, acoustic telemetry fish study. This article does not contain any studies involving human participants.
