: The ethical challenges faced in the paper concern the risks of unfair outcomes of AI systems and the current limits in the Ethics & AI debate in conceptualizing and operationalizing the ethical value of fairness in the specific context of ML-based ADM. The potential impact of the work is expected both on the theoretical side of the research in Ethics of AI, as an enrichment of the debate on the moral value of fairness in ADM—drawing insights from accounts of fairness developed in moral philosophy—and on the side of application, as the ethical inquiry into fairness could provide insights for the design of novel techniques that go beyond bias detection and reduction to operationalize and implement fairness in ADM.
