: This study comprised both the analysis of human skeletal remains and a replicability study involving living participants. Permission for the analysis of human skeletal remains in Thailand was granted under a permit issued to the University of Otago, with individual research permission granted to SEP by the Fine Arts Department Thailand. All work was conducted in accordance with Thai regulations governing the study of archaeological human remains and with the guidelines of the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (Standards for Recording Human Remains 2017). Ethical approval for this research project was obtained from Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge Ethics Review Board. Informed consent was obtained from all individual participants included in the study.
