Compliance with Ethical Standards
: The data collection took place in a club for Russian seniors in the framework of the project Between the Normal and the Abnormal – Cultural Meanings of Dementia and Old age in Finland and Russia. Our research team developed nuanced ethical guidelines, and all participants of the research were informed about the nature of the research. I discussed and explained the ethics of the research to the participants, their right to participate in the research voluntarily, and withdraw at any stage of research. It was also in the process of discussion between the researcher and the researched, whether participants would prefer to provide their life stories in a written form or in a conversation (as an ethnographic interview). Again, the provision of their life stories was voluntary, and two individuals out of ten applied their right not to provide their stories for the purpose of this research. Those, who provided their stories, signed the informed consent for their stories to be used for research analysis and publications within this project. All the names, and the location have been carefully anonymized.
: This manuscript is an original research article that has not been submitted for publication earlier and is not under consideration for publication anywhere else. It has not been published previously (partly or in full), and this is a single piece, in which I report on the results of my ethnographic research. I carefully refer to all the theories, texts, and data, which I have applied to theoretically and analytically frame the findings of my research. No data have been fabricated or manipulated to support my conclusions. My paper is a single-author manuscript, as the research has been conducted by me. Naturally, I thank in the acknowledgements all those, who have commented on earlier versions of this manuscript.
: I declare that I have no conflict of interest.
