: Photophysical properties of N0C0/N1C1 with or without cadmium were measured at room temperature. Extinction coefficients (ε, mM<sup>− 1</sup> · cm<sup>− 1</sup>) were calculated from absorbance (abs) spectra. QYs of N0C0 and N1C1 were measured against EGFP at pH 7.4 (QY 0.6). Brightness is defined as the product of extinction coefficient and quantum yield. Experimental data were fitted to Hill1 equation.
