: The current study used the secondary, publicly available data from the five national community-based surveys. Study participants who enrolled in five national surveys provided either written or verbal consent. Participants confirmed their consent by signature or witnessed thumbprint.
: The South Africa National Income Dynamics Survey (SA-NIDS) study datasets are publicly available for research purposes. Approval for the primary study was granted by the Ethics Committee of the University of Cape Town. The current study is a secondary data analysis of an open access data set and does not require further ethical approval (July 10, 2017).
: Data were collected using telephone surveys. Therefore a verbal consent obtained from the participants by asking if they want to participate the survey. Those who said “yes” were included in the surveys.
