: The tissue used in this study was donated by the ENCB-IPN tissue bank (G. mutica - ENCB_Chi-Phy_0759; G. morenoi - ENCB_Chi-Phy_0801) and by The Museo de Zoología “Alfonso L. Herrera”, UNAM (G. mutica – MZFC-M464). Tissue samples were chosen randomly from the available tissue bank or through corresponding donations. All animal procedures adhered to the ethical standards outlined in the guidelines of the American Society of Mammalogists for the use of wild animals in research (Sikes and Gannon 2011 J Mammal 92(1):235–253; Sikes et al. 2019 J Mammal 100(3): 763–773), which has established an ethical standard for the use of wild mammals in research since 1985. The ENCB-IPN tissue bank and Museo Zoología “Alfonso L. Herrera” conducted sampling under the legal framework provided by scientific collector permits (SEMARNAT SGPDA/DGVS/07992/20, SPARN/DGVS/02881/24) issued by the Dirección General de Vida Silvestre from the Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, and the protocol for this research project was reviewed and approved by the ECOSUR Ethics Committee for Research (CEI-05-07-2023b).
