: As potential conflict of interests, we declare that two of the authors of this manuscript (Cluver and Doubt) were part of the team that designed the intervention.

: All procedures were in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional and/or national research committee and with the 1964 Helsinki Declaration and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committees at the University of Oxford, the University of Cape Town, and by the South African Departments of Social Development and Department of Basic Education.

: Informed consent was obtained from all participants in the study. Community consent was sought from local governments and traditional chiefs. Participants completed written informed consent forms. Both child and caregiver had to agree for the dyad to participate.
