Animal Testing and Ethics
: The Institute of Physiologically Active Substances of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution Federal Research Center of Problems of Chemical Physics and Medicinal Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPAS RAS) has a vivarium with everything necessary for working with and keeping animals, qualified personnel, and a Preclinical Testing Center that has a RusAccreditation Certificate No. 10 on compliance with the principles of good laboratory practice. To evaluate the antioxidant properties of compounds and their effect on mitochondrial characteristics, liver mitochondria and brain homogenate from outbred laboratory rats were isolated using the standard method for animal euthanasia with carbon dioxide. The standard manipulations for animal euthanasia (mice, rats) used in this study were approved by the Bioethics Commission of IPAS RAS (Protocol No. 72 of April 24, 2023). All experiments with animals to study eye pathologies were conducted in accordance with the recommendations given in “Statement for the Use of Animals in Ophthalmic and Visual Research” of The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) ().To evaluate the hypotensive properties of the tested compounds in vivo, Chinchilla rabbits were used, which were kept in the vivarium of the Helmholtz National Medical Research Center for Eye Diseases, which is equipped with everything necessary for working with animals. The protocol for a standard study of the effect of compounds on IOP in rabbits was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Helmholtz National Medical Research Center for Eye Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (extract 54/7 from the minutes of the meeting of the Ethics Committee of the Helmholtz National Medical Research Center for Eye Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation No. 54 dated 13.05.2021). The protocol for a standard study of the effect of compounds on IOP in rats was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Volgograd State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (extract from the meeting of the Local Ethics Committee of the Volgograd State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation No. 43 dated 02.12.2022).
