: The field research received ethics approval from the Research and Research Ethics Committee of the School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh. During the periods covered by the field research, the author was occasionally contracted by immigration lawyers to act as a ‘country expert’ witness in UK asylum procedures. His dual role as expert and researcher was known to and agreed by all parties. He no longer undertakes such expert witness work.
