: I dedicate this essay to Gyorgy Buzsaki. He short cut the road from his original interest in physics to brain research having graduated from the medical school in Pécs in the southwest of Hungary. He is now the Biggs Professor of Neuroscience at New York University School of Medicine. He was a co-recipient of the first Brain Prize in 2011 and received the Ralph W. Gerard Award of the Society of Neuroscience in 2020.
