: This is an observational study, involved pre-collected and bio-banked samples taken from carcasses of wild animals found dead. An ethics assessment by Aberystwyth University at a departmental level was approved and it found a full review by the Research Ethics Panel was not required.
: All samples used in this study were collected from badgers that were found dead. The carcasses were undergoing a post-mortem as part of an ongoing Welsh government study (All Wales Badger Found Dead study) to monitor levels of tuberculosis in the population, when an additional sample was taken for this study.
