: This paper was based on de-identified secondary data and so did not require formal approval under the NHMRC National Statement (‘negligible risk’ project). All surveys were subject to appropriate ethical oversight at the time of completion.

: Both authors work in the field of psychology and are actively involved in research, consultation work that involves multidisciplinary perspectives including references to the principles of public health approaches. Both researchers have conducted research and reviews for organisations such as the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, GambleAware (UK) and other similar organisations. PD has previously published papers and conducted paid consultancy work that makes reference to both public health and responsible gambling.
