Declarations

: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the university of the corresponding author. An announcement was posted in the online course by the corresponding author, which included the approved Explanation of Research which explained that opting into the study meant that permission was being given to allow the researchers to analyze their photos and discussions posts. Students were asked to email the author if they were interested in participating. As an incentive to participate in the study, students received extra credit as long as they completed a survey about their experience. Students who did not wish to participate in the study but desired extra credit were offered an alternate assignment which they could complete. The instructor did not know which students opted into the study until after final grades for the course were calculated.

: Written informed consent from all subjects for publication of identifying images has been obtained.

: There were no conflicts of interest regarding the collection and analysis of the data; the instructor was not part of the research team.
