Ethical approval: Survey sites of this study are partially situated within Special Protection Zones designated under the Natural Parks Act of Japan and the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and within areas designated as a Special Natural Monument under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties. Field survey and taxon sampling was conducted with permissions issued by the Agency for Cultural Affairs under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties (permission #: Bunkacho No. 4–2172, issued on 17 April 2020), the Ministry of the Environment under the Natural Parks Act (permission #: Kankyu-Yaku-Jikyo No. 2006121, issued on 12 June 2020), and the Forestry Agency for access to national forests (permission #: Protected Forest Survey permission 33, issued on 11 August 2020). The studied species is not legally protected, and no specific collection permissions were required.
