: We declare as authors of this study that there is no conflict of interest. The study focused mainly on the choice of alternative job by illegal miners in the Pra Basin of Ghana. This was an intervention meant to reduce the impact of the illegal mining on the water resources in the basin. The work did not receive any financial support from any external organization.
: In Ghana ethical approval is not needed to conduct a survey which does not bother on the health of the individuals involved. However, the consent of the individual would have to be sorted before the questionnaire can be administered. In this case the views and beliefs of the miners is what the study focussed on.
