The International Society of Ethnobotany Code of Ethics was used as a point of reference throughout the research process. The research presented in this manuscript was approved by the Pennsylvania State University Institutional Review Board (IRB study 00018492), which included instruments, consent forms, and research methods that clearly communicated the goals and associated risks to anyone taking the survey or participating in an interview.
