: This project was reviewed and deemed exempt by the University of Oregon IRB (Number 06052017.007) and by the Zanzibar Research Committee. A process of informed consent was followed for all interviews conducted as part of this research project, which included verbally talking through the project in both Swahili and English and leaving potential participants with a written explanatory document in Swahili and English before interviewing them. At the beginning of the interview, participants were asked if they wanted their proper names attached to their statement. At the conclusion of the interview, participants were asked again if they wanted their interview to be used as part of the project, and if they wanted their proper name attached to their statement, with the ability to withdraw entirely or to use a pseudonym. This process was described in materials submitted to the University of Oregon and to the Zanzibar Research Committee, and the project was approved by both bodies.
