Terminilogy: The terms ‘disorder’ and ‘condition’ related to autism are debated in both autistic and scientific communities, lacking a clear consensus on preferred terminology. Where required by diagnostic or classificatory context, this paper uses ‘ASD’ and ‘disorder’ as per the DSM-5. Throughout the manuscript, however, both person-first (‘autistic adults’) and identity-first (‘adults with autism’) language are used interchangeably to reflect diverse perspectives and reduce stigma (Gernsbacher, 2017; Vivanti, 2020).
