An ethics review is required when research involves intervention in the physical integrity of participants; deviates from informed consent; involves participants under 15 being studied without parental consent; exposes participants to exceptionally strong stimuli; risks long-term mental harm beyond that encountered in daily life; or involves security risks (Finnish National Board on Research Integrity, 2019).
