: The National Park Service is dedicated to preserving and protecting the nation's history, including at Civil War battlefield sites. Discoveries of human remains at these solemn spaces of sacrifice and service follow ethical guidelines for their treatment, documentation, and recovery. The inadvertent discovery and unique historical context of the human remains in this study resulted in mitigation that included excavation and analysis. Cooperative agreements with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the United States Army resulted in transfer of the two soldiers (Burials 1 and 2) to the Army’s 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard,” for burial at Arlington National Cemetery in September 2018.
